Angier, Walter E.

This collection contains mostly photographs and cyanotypes of a railroad bridge across the Mississippi River from Thebes, IL to Illmo, MO constructed between 1901 and 1905. Angier served as a consultant on the project and extensively documented the progress of the bridge. Also included are photos of a cyclone disaster in Bush, IL; a mine disaster in Royalton IL; coal handling plants in Cleveland OH, Cairo, IL and Chicago; photos of Angier; and picture postcards, many from southern Illinois. This collection complements VFM 991.

Allen, John Willis

Allen , an author, amateur historian, and school teacher, served in various positions at SIUC, including sixteen years as Historical Director of SIUC's University Museum. He wrote six books on southern Illinois history, in addition to a weekly column circulated by numerous newspapers. Over the years, Allen collected a variety of materials pertaining to Illinois history, including these photographs, many of which are organized by county.

This collection contains reprinted photographs relating to the career of Peruvian diplomat and businessman Federico Luciano Barreda y Aquilar and his wife. Barreda was, at one point, ambassador to the new administration of Abraham Lincoln and was also involved in diplomatic relations with several European countries. The photos depict European and American aristocracy in the 19th century.

Cummings, Sylvia Beach, Bob Brown, and many others are pictured. The collection contains photos used in Being Geniuses Together, including a number of photos by Man Ray

Breuer, Bessie

Bessie Breuer was a journalist and writer who was part of the expatriate literary movement in France. Encouraged by Kay Boyle, Breuer moved from journalism to fiction, publishing a number of short stories and novels. Breuer considered herself an experimental writer. These photographs picture Breuer, her family and friends, the cast of Sundown Beach, and a photo of Kay Boyle.

This collection of photographs of American expatriate writer Bob Brown complements Manuscript Collection 88. The collection contains photographs taken by Carlton Brown, Bob Brown's son, during a 1959 family visit to the home of Kay Boyle and Joseph Frankenstein in Rowayton, Connecticut, three months before Bob Brown's death. The collection includes photographs of Bob Brown, Kay Boyle, Joseph Frankenstein, Eleanor Parker Brown, Clover Vail, Carlton Brown's family, and various literary friends.

These photographs were collected by Busch, a former SIU student, who served on the Student Advisory Committee for Master Plan III, Lieutenant Governor Paul Simon's Committee to Study Campus Unrest, and the Coordinating Task Force which dealt with the aftereffects of the May 1970 student unrest at SIU. Most of the photographs, taken by Daily Egyptian staff photographers, depict student protests from January through May 1970.

Also included are photographs of medals, churches, book covers, the magazine logo, and images which accompanied an article by Harold Fey (editor from 1955-1964), "Infantry Chaplain in Korea."

These photos were removed from four albums belonging to Elsie Ripley Clapp, former graduate student of John Dewey and teacher at Arthurdale, West Virginia. Arthurdale was created by the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration as a homestead for unemployed West Virginians during the Great Depression. The photos show the buildings and grounds of Arthurdale, its teachers, employees, residents, school activities, and children. The collection, which complements Manuscript Collection 21, also includes Farm Security photographs and photos of West Virginia resettlement homes, coal mining families, and other public projects

This collection contains three groups of photographs. The first and largest group consists of 1918 U.S. government photographs of WWI scenes at the French front, including soldiers of the 33rd Illinois Division (with the 132nd regiment from Chicago); land and sea battles; battlegrounds; prisoners of war; post-battle landscapes; soldier ships; weaponry; local villages and people; and Major General George Bell, Jr., Commander of the 33rd Division. The second group of photos appears to document troops returning to New York City, and the third group consists of 25 photographs Colp took documenting the destruction of West Frankford, IL by the tri-state tornado of March 18, 1925.

This collection documents the involvement of the Community Development Service in community improvement and efforts to attract industry to Southern Illinois towns. The collection includes photographs and slides of early Community Development staff, of citizens and their communities, of work accomplished through volunteer labor, and of Community Development's tenth anniversary activities in 1963. Some of the areas represented include: Aviston, Cairo, Carlyle, Carrier Mills, Cobden (four folders), Chester, Coulterville, DuQuoin, East St. Louis, Edwardsville, Eldorado, Flora, Freeburg, Galatia, Gallatin County, Garden of the Gods, Giant City Park, Golconda, Grand Tower, Hardin County, Harrisburg (3+ folders), Mounds, Muddy, Omaha, Randolph county, and the Little Saline River and Lake. Counts, George S.

George S. Counts was an educator, who taught at Yale University, the University of Chicago, and the Teachers College at Columbia University. After his retirement from Columbia, Counts served as Visiting Distinguished Professor in SIUC's College of Education from 1962 to 1974. He was active in a many political and professional organizations and wrote numerous books. These photographs picture Counts and some of his professional colleagues. The collection complements Manuscript Collection 24.

Crosby, Caresse

Caresse Crosby, poet, patron of the arts, and cofounder of the Black Sun Press, was part of the American expatriate literary and artistic establishment in Paris during the 1920s, along with her husband and fellow poet, Harry Crosby. This collection, which complements Manuscript Collection 140, contains all the photographs in Caresse Crosby's personal collection at the time of her death. The collection contains photographs of Caresse, Harry, their family, friends, and associates, and their artwork. Aubrey Beardsley, Kay Boyle, Jean Cocteau, Hart Crane, Salvador Dali, Ernest Hemingway, Roger Lescaret, Henry Miller, and Ezra Pound are among those pictured.

This small collection contains miscellaneous photographs obtained in 1975 depicting student life, university services and staff, campus events and scenes, drama and dance performances, artwork, awards, buildings, Campus Lake, faculty, administrators, student organizations, and visiting entertainers. The collection also includes images related to the School of Agriculture, the College of Education, the College of Liberal Arts, ROTC, the Airport, the School of Technical Careers (Vocational Technical Institute), the first class of the Medical School, scenes of Carbondale and Crab Orchard, and a photograph of Buckminster Fuller and his geodesic dome.

This sizable collection complements Manuscript Collection 102, the papers of John Dewey, eminent American philosopher-educator. The collection contains images of Dewey and his family members; John Dewey in China; assorted friends, colleagues and professional associates; Dewey-related places; and scenic shots and postcards from all over the world. Later photographs depict Roberta Dewey, after her husband's death.

MacClintock attended Dewey's Laboratory School, where Dewey tested his hypotheses regarding how people learn and how education can further social progress. MacClintock, whose mother taught at the school, donated these photographs, which depict classroom scenes, student art and projects, dramatic scenes, and various group and individual activities.

Dunham, Katherine

This large collection complements the papers of Katherine Dunham, Faculty Papers 20-7-F1, in the University Archives. Dunham, an internationally renowned dancer, choreographer, and dance teacher, is a native of Joliet, Illinois. She was one of the first African Americans to attend the University of Chicago, where she earned bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in anthropology. Dunham taught at SIUE beginning in 1967. The collection includes images of Dunham, her family, her dance troupes, other artists and celebrities, her world travels, her dance schools, and scenes of her teaching at SIUE. There are also approximately 400 photos taken by Dunham in the Caribbean while she was doing research for her Master's degree in the 1930s.

Alice Parkinson Feirich graduated from SINU in 1911 and taught at the Training School 1913-1920. Her father held various positions at SINU, including Secretary of the faculty, Registrar, and President. This collection complements Manuscript Collection 37 and contains photographs of the class of 1911, the 1951 reunion of the class of 1911, the Feirich family, SINU buildings, and turn of the century Southern Illinois houses.

This collection consists of a 40-page two-family album of nineteenth century photographs, mostly of unidentified people. It contains examples of older photographic processes and styles, such as cabinet cards, tintypes, and cart-de-viste photographs. Some of the photographs bear inscriptions indicating their origins in New York, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, and Tennessee.

Complementing Manuscript Collection 147, this collection of clippings and other materials comprises an image file which was used by Mordecai Gorelik, former SIUC Theater professor, in set design. Krause, Bonnie

Krause worked for SIUC in various capacities, including positions in Area Services, the University Museum, and the Office of Research Development and Administration. She was director of the Illinois Ozarks Craft Guild and directed many grants pertaining to the arts. This collection consists of photos, negatives, slides, and tapes, which complement the Krause faculty papers. It contains images of Cairo, IL, Gibson City, IL, exhibit pieces, exhibits, displays, and festivals.

In 1938 Paul Arthur Schilpp, of Northwestern University, established the Library of Living Philosophers series which published volumes containing individual philosophers' autobiographical notes and essays, followed by criticisms and the authors' responses to the critiques. In 1965, Schilpp accepted the position of Distinguished Visiting Professor of Philosophy at SIUC. The university took over full responsibility for the Library of Living Philosophers in 1979. This collection, which complements Manuscript Collection 20, contains photos of Schilpp and various philosophers associated with the project, including Bertrand Russell and Albert Einstein.

This collection includes a variety of southern Illinois photographs, many of which were taken by A.M. Mitchell. It contains reprints of Charlie Birger, his family and gang, and the Birger hanging. Other photos depict the hangings of Joe Pack Smith and Joe Clemens, a 1952 Centennial parade, Devil's Bake Oven at Grand Tower, the George Dunn homestead in Equality, the 1937 Harrisburg flood, a coal mine tunnel, and Shawneetown scenes.

Open Court

Open Court Publishing Company, of LaSalle, Illinois, was a joint venture of Paul Carus and E.C. Hegeler. The company began publishing a magazine, The Open Court, in 1887. Carus and Hegeler corresponded with well-known scholars around the world, and the publishing company expanded to produce books and other materials. The publications of Open Court were devoted to the exploration of scientific and religious philosophy. The photograph collection, which complements Manuscript Collection 27, depicts religious art, sites, people, and images from Western Europe, Japan, India, and the Middle East. Carus family photos are also included.

Many of these photographs were used in the book, History of Union County (3 vols.) by Parks. The collection includes photos of an 1898 Cobden baseball team; a 1911 Anna Women's Club Garden Party; the 1895 Egyptian Cornet Band of Cobden; churches, cemeteries, memorials and markers; businesses, buildings, schools, and homes; farming scenes; scenery and wildlife; aerial views of Anna and Jonesboro; Bald Knob; and Frank Willard's "Moon Mullens" drawings.

Piscator, Erwin

Erwin Piscator was a German theatrical director and producer, who originated the Epic theatre style. He produced social and political plays, employing optical, acoustical and mechanical devices to create a total theatre experience. He came to the United States in 1939 to direct the Dramatic Workshop of the New School for Social Research in New York City and returned to Germany around 1958. These photographs picture his stage productions, including images of Rod Steiger, Marlon Brando, Arthur Miller, and Tony Curtis. The collection also includes photographs of Piscator and his wife, Maria.

Putnam, Samuel

Samuel Putnam was an Illinois-born journalist, translator, and editor, who joined other Chicago literary figures in Paris in 1926. He wrote for the Chicago Tribune and The Evening Post and worked with such notable people as Harriet Monroe, Harold Stearns, H.L. Mencken, and Thorstein Veblen. In Paris he edited The New Review and published a number of translations. Putnam was particularly interested in Brazil. This collection contains mostly mounted photographs of Brazilian people, cities, landscapes, and street scenes. A few photographs of Putnam are included, plus photos of poet Jorge de Lima, scholar Fidelino de Figueiredo, writer Oswald de Andrade, and educator A. Carneiro Leao.

Rendleman Family

John Jacob Rendleman was a southern Illinois physician who attended SINU in the 1870s. He worked as a country doctor in the hills of southern Illinois, making his calls on horseback, before establishing a practice in Cairo in 1889. These photographs depict Rendleman, his home, office and examining room, other physicians, and an old church organ.

Joseph Rickert, of Waterloo, Illinois, was a lawyer, banker, politician, teacher, amateur historian, and civic leader. Schroeder was a lawyer, activist, and controversial author, whose writings focused on freedom of expression and social injustices. He studied psychology, mysticism, and religion and was one of the founders of the Free Speech League. This collection contains portraits, caricatures, and drawings of Schroeder, plus photographs of friends, family, and associates.

Illinois native Harry Allen Smith was a successful writer and humorist. These photographs complement manuscript collection 121, depicting Smith in his professional life, private life, and travels. The collection includes photos of Smith, his family and friends, as well as celebrities such as Jimmy Durante, Al Jolson, Fred Allen, Carl Reiner, Arthur Godfrey, Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite, Delyte Morris, Bing Crosby, Jacqueline Onassis and Albert Einstein. The photos are arranged in four series - photos including Allen, photos of other people, photos of places, and miscellaneous photos.

Teeter Family

Late 19th Century - 1970s

The Teeter family photographs document family life in Carbondale and southern Illinois. H.H. Teeter was a railroad brakeman and entrepreneur. Teeter and his wife Nancy Belle had six children, all of whom grew up in Carbondale. Lillian, the fifth child, was the subject of a book about Carbondale, Miss Lillian's Town, by Emilyn Morris. The collection contains photos of family members and friends; the SINU campus; SINU students and events; the SINU and SIUC classes of 1904, 1909, 1912, 1913, 1952, and 1954; Spanish-American war soldiers; Worlds Fairs, including the Columbian Exposition; and Carbondale and southern Illinois people, places and events. The collection includes tintypes and various artifacts, including a cloth banner from the Spanish American War.

Professor Christian Moe of the SIUC Theater Department donated these photos, which depict 49 plays presented by the Southern Players, the New Salem State Park Kelso Hollow Theater, and the Department of Theater's international playwriting competition in 1972.

This commission of inquiry heard testimony concerning allegations that Leon Trotsky had plotted to subvert the government of the Soviet Union. The collection complements Manuscript Collection 153.

The collection is divided into categories - up top of the mines, underground, coal processing, service buildings, and processed coal. Photographs of maps are also included. The photos were donated by the Coal Research Center at SIUC, having previously belonged to the Freeman Coal Company in Franklin County, IL.
