The State Archives administers the Illinois Regional Archives Depository (IRAD) system to manage the archival records of local governments. While one depository is devoted solely to Cook County, the other six include regions comprising from 14 to 23 contiguous counties. Records on deposit at the SIU-Carbondale facility are from the following counties:

Alexander
Clinton
Franklin
Gallatin
Hamilton
Hardin
Jackson
Jefferson
Johnson
Madison
Marion
Massac
Monroe
Perry
Pope
Pulaski
Randolph
St. Clair
Saline
Union
Washington
White
Williamson

A list of IRAD holdings by county can be found on the State Archives Web site:

http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/irad/iradhome.html

Click on Databases and choose Local Governmental Records Holdings. Type in the county name in which you are interested and click on Search. You will see a list of all records, complete with their date ranges and full record title.

Those records held by SIU-C, as well as the graduate assistant interns who conduct the research, are housed at a remote site on this campus and are not accessible by internet. I must therefore ask you to submit your request by United States mail to:

IRAD-SIUC
c/o Morris Library/Special Collections
Southern Illinois University at Carbondale
Mail Code 6632
Carbondale, IL 62901-6632.

Please state:

Full name of the person you are researching.
Approximate year this person is expected to appear in a record.
Name of the county.
Record title or type to search (birth, probate, marriage, etc.).
Researchers also are asked to limit requests to two (2) names at a time and to wait for a response to one request before submitting additional requests.

The research services of the IRAD system are provided at no charge. Therefore, when requesting information by mail, a self-addressed, stamped envelope is not necessary. Unless an expenditure limit is set in advance by the researcher, authorization to produce photocopies will be requested for billings that exceed $5.00. Photocopy charges are presently $0.25 per page with a $1.00 minimum charge (subject to change). You will be billed when we send you the copies.

Researchers may visit our IRAD depository and examine the records that are available. The office is located at the Library Storage Building on McLafferty Road (not in Morris Library) one and a half miles east of the Library. The office is staffed by graduate student interns Monday through Friday. Depositories are closed on Saturdays and Sundays, state and federal holidays, and any weekdays the university library is closed. Hours are reduced in June, July and August. Researchers are urged to call before planning a visit (618-453-3040).
