About Special Collections

Special Collections is composed of printed research collections (Rare Books), non-print collections of manuscripts, correspondence, and photographic images (Manuscripts), and non-current records of the University which have either historic, legal or monetary worth (University Archives). In general, the Rare Book and Manuscript collections complement one another to form in-depth research collections of published and unpublished materials.

Areas of specialization include:

American Philosophy, including the papers and library of John Dewey and many of his colleagues, the archives of the Open Court Press, the Christian Century magazine, the Library of Living Philosophers, and the papers and libraries of other individuals and organizations such as George S. Counts, James K. Feibleman, Matthew Lipman, Stephen Pepper, Henry Nelson Wieman, Paul Wiess, Edwin H. Wilson, the Foundation for Philosophy of Creativity, the North American Society for Social Philosophy, and Kenneth Burke.
First Amendment Freedoms, including the Ralph E. McCoy Freedom of the Press Collection and Bibliography, papers and libraries of Theodore Schroeder, and John Howard Lawson, and the selected papers and library of Elmer Gertz as related to Henry Miller, Chicago Journalism, and Gertz v.Welch litigation.
American and British Expatriates, especially for the period between World War I and World War II, including Richard Aldington, Kay Boyle, Lawrence Durrell, Robert Graves, D.H. Lawrence, Henry Miller, and others.
James Joyce, especially the Harley K. Croessmann of James Joyce Collection, which includes papers of Herbert Gorman, George Goyert, Stanislaus Joyce, and others.
The Irish Literary Renaissance, centered about William Butler Yeats, Lady Gregory, Lennox Robinson and the Abbey Theatre, Brian O'Nolan, Katharine Hinkson, and Francis Stuart.
Legislative Papers, including U.S. Senator Paul Simon, U.S. Representative Kenneth Gray, Illinois Representative Kenneth Buzbee.
Proletariat theatre, including John Howard Lawson, Erwin Piscator, and Mordecai Gorelik.
Southern Illinois history in print and in manuscript, including the papers of John W. Allen, George Washington Smith, Wayman Presley, and others.

IRAD

Illinois Regional Archives Depository (IRAD), including local county government records for the lower twenty-three (23) counties of Southern Illinois, such as birth, death, marriage, tax, wills and probate, deeds, etc.
