This calendar has been adapted for internet use with permission of the publishers by coordinated effort of Instructional Support Services and the Science Division of Library Affairs, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Originally printed and sold for use as a birthday calendar or perpetual calendar, it provided cues about natural events of the season as well as space for special occasions and personal observations. It was also a tribute to Todd Fink, the natural heritage biologist whose observations comprise the content of the calendar, and a source of funds for a continuing memorial scholarship in his name. In spring of 1997, the original publishers, friends of Todd, decided not to reprint and consented to web publishing by Library Affairs. Our intent was to preserve the content and much of the "look" of the original publication while making use of the special capabilities of the new technology. In addition to what was originally published, our web adaptation includes an alphabetical index allowing site visitors to chose subjects from a list and be "hot-linked" within the file to the date when that subject is mentioned. Information is also provided about the Todd Fink Memorial-Illinois Conservation Foundation Scholarship available through four SIUC graduate programs. Web presentation of this calendar makes natural events information about Southern Illinois freely available to a wider audience and may help perpetuate the memorial honoring a great scholar and environmentalist. Below, we present information from the front page as it originally appeared except where outdated. This calendar, often called a "Birthday Calendar," is specially created for remembering birthdays, anniversaries, and other events that occur on the same date every year. Designed to be used year after year, it will be convenient for recording other natural happenings such as flower bloom dates, frost dates, snowfalls, and the life histories of birds and other animals. Natural events involving flora and fauna listed here are a compilation of years of recordkeeping by Todd Fink (1959-1995), an ornithologist and natural heritage biologist. In many instances they represent the peak occurrences of specific events, rather than precise forecasting, and should be used as guides or cues. Those familiar with the first edition of this calendar will discover dozens of new entries that Todd had been recording in anticipation of the second printing. Thanks to Judy DeNeal and Bob Lindsey, Todd's friends and colleagues, who gladly provided editing for much of the new information. The designs are inspired by the many bird-like elements found in Native American arts. The mythological, ceremonial and representational subjects were inseparable parts of all objects created to satisfy the utilitarian and spiritual needs of the first Americans.
